Board of Directors

This Section sets out a summary of each of the Directors of SGEH (all of which are also directors of SGE).


Samuel Snyder, Non Executive ChairmanSam Snyder
Bsc, Msc in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering.

Sam was appointed to the SGEH Board on its incorporation on 5 March 2007 and was appointed to the SGE Board on 7 August 2006.

Sam is the former Managing Director of Chevron China and prior to that of Texaco China (October 1997 to July 2006). Sam is recognised as one of the pioneers of CBM exploration in China playing a key role in Texaco signing the first CBM production sharing contract in China. Whilst at Chevron, and formerly Texaco, he was instrumental in developing both their on-shore and off-shore oil and gas assets.

Sam has a BSc and MSc in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering from Pennsylvania State University together with 34 years experience encompassing all aspects of the international upstream oil and gas business and a documented record of developing positive relationships and building successful international businesses.

Sam was Managing Director of SGEH and SGE until 30 April 2008 and was appointed as the Non Executive Chairman on 1 May 2008.


Stephen Lyons, Managing DirectorStephen Lyons
B.Bus (Accounting), ACA, Member of the Australian Institute of Chartered Accountants

Stephen was appointed Managing Director with effect from 20 May 2008.  He has been SGE's Chief Financial Officer from September 2006 and retains responsibility for this portfolio.  He was Company Secretary from SGE's formation in July 2005 to August 2008.

Stephen holds a Bachelor of Accounting degree from Curtin University of Western Australia, is a qualified Chartered Accountant and Member of the Australian Institute of Chartered Accountants. He has an audit, corporate services and banking background and has worked in Australia, London and now China. He has held a number of executive positions with Australian ASX Listed companies, the Australian operations of a Swiss based multinational and private companies. He has also consulted to a London based merchant bank and previously worked for Ernst & Young and an internationally affiliated accounting group, mainly focusing on audit and corporate services.

Stephen is a foundation stakeholder in SGE and was a key part of the team that negotiated and implemented the successful farm-in from Chevron. He has been a pivotal member of SGE's executive management team since SGE's formation. As Managing Director he leads the Beijing based executive team, reporting to the Board. He has been based in Beijing, China since mid calendar 2006.


John Chandler, Non Executive DirectorJohn Chandler
LL.B. (Hons) , Diploma in Business Administration, Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales, Barrister and Solicitor Western Australia, FAICD.

John is a lawyer with over 30 years commercial, corporate and business experience. He has been a partner in major law firms including Freehills, KPMG Legal and Deacons, and now practices on his own with a focus on the oil and gas industry and corporate governance. In the last 10 years, John has acted in acquisition, joint venture and project negotiations for, amongst others, Chinese and Japanese companies, including Sinosteel, Anshan, Tokyo Electric and Tokyo Gas. John was appointed to the SGEH Board on 16 April 2008. Currently, he is also a director of Structerre Consulting, an unlisted structural engineering company with over 100 employees, and he is the Associate Director of the Centre for Mining, Energy and Natural Resources Law at the University of Western Australia.


Gavin Harper, Non Executive DirectorGavin Harper
BA from University of Kent at Canterbury and Diploma in Business Administration from Strathclyde University.

Gavin has over 30 years experience in the oil and gas industry in a variety of leadership roles, primarily with Chevron Corporation. He has broad experience of working in both operating and non-operating roles in complex joint ventures - in Asia, Australia and the UK. His most recent role with Chevron was as Managing Director of Chevron's gas business development company in Korea. Gavin has been involved with Sino since June 2006 in various capacities and was appointed as a director of SGEH on 14 March 2008.

He is a founder and currently an executive Director of Plantation Energy, a leading biomass renewable energy producer in Australia. He is also a non-executive Director of NuEnergy Capital Limited (ASX:NGY), a company currently in the process of acquiring CBM assets in Indonesia.


Bernie William Ridgeway, Non Executive DirectorBernie Ridgeway
B.Bus (Accounting), ACA.

Bernie was appointed to the SGEH Board on its incorporation on 5 March 2007. He was appointed to the SGE Board on 15 July 2005.

Bernie was responsible for initially recognizing the potential to develop a clean energy business in China. He has been instrumental in the formation and direction of SGE.

Bernie is a qualified Chartered Accountant, a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He has been involved with a number of public and private companies for over 25 years and is currently the Managing Director of Imdex Limited (ASX:IMD), an Australian ASX listed company.


Paul Mason, Company SecretaryPaul Mason
B. Engineering, ACA, Member of the Australian Institute of Chartered Accountants

Paul was appointed Company Secretary of SGEH and SGE on 25 August 2008. Paul holds a Bachelor of Engineering Degree and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. He assists a number of companies listed on the ASX with their reporting and company secretarial matters.

Paul has an audit background and has worked for Coopers & Lybrand in the United Kingdom, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu in Sydney and Ernst & Young in Perth. Paul is based in Perth.
